Economic Development Guided By Stewardship
Writing
This portfolio sample draws on my original writing for a 2024 Indigenous Economic Development Annual Report CEO letter. Content has been adapted and anonymized for portfolio use.
I reframed this excerpt as a third-person narrative to reflect how the organization understands business as a vehicle for long-term community well-being.
A First Nation has entrusted its Economic Development Corporation to build generational wealth for its People. The Nation's values and vision guide the company's operations. In response to Nation priorities, the company is laying the groundwork for current and future generations to live securely on their lands. It follows the path of past leaders, who advanced land stewardship and early Nation-led initiatives.
The company is guided by the Nation’s generational plan. Its income funds social, cultural, and community projects that uplift the community. Income is a pathway to achieving self-determination and the conditions in which the Nation's People thrive.
The company’s aim is not to maximize short-term business cycles, but to create long-term wealth. During the previous year, leadership looked inward to ensure the foundation was secure and could support decades of growth, even in difficult economic conditions. The company put the right supports in place, investing in processes, governance, systems, and teams. Guided by its purpose, it focused on safeguarding the financial, social, and cultural future of the Nation's People.
Several Indigenous business leaders are on the company’s leadership team. Each brings both industry expertise and a commitment to the Nation's well-being. To help move the Nation toward greater economic sovereignty, the team now oversees all major projects, a testament to its strength and experience.
The company is steadfast as it continues the work of previous leaders. As it moves forward, it remains rooted in its relationship to the Nation and those who made this work possible.
