How I Move Projects From Conception To Delivery
All purposeful writing answers the question “Why are we communicating this message and why now?” The most impactful messaging sits at the intersection of your organization’s specific outcomes and stories, and why they matter to your readers.
I begin all my projects there, and then move through a structured process that helps me deliver focused, efficient, and consistent work.
Writing Process
-
I start by learning about your organization’s purpose, mission, and values. We discuss the story you want to tell, why you want to tell it, the specific outcomes you need, and how we’ll measure success. I understand your community’s needs, motivations, and values, and I examine your existing brand voice guidelines.
-
Before writing, I submit a brief that outlines who the piece is for, along with key messages, tone, audience reading level, and the outcomes you want to show or enable. I'll clarify any ethical or compliance requirements at this stage. Once you sign off on the brief, I begin gathering information from key person interviews, your existing materials, and my own research.
-
I combine all information into a coherent draft that aligns with the writing brief. I humanize your message, making it clear and relevant for your community. Expect detailed comments that flag inconsistencies and gaps for you to address. Throughout the process, I work in line with your internal review processes.
-
You return the draft to me with your required changes. I take a collaborative approach to editing, working with you to refine accuracy, tone, flow, and clarity. My edits will be tracked, and I’ll add explanations where needed.
-
I incorporate your changes and comments, and catch any remaining spelling, punctuation, phrasing, or formatting issues. You receive a clean, ready-to-use version, along with any guidance that will further support your stated goals.
